The University of Windsor
Building Data, Publishing Research, Owning Our Story
The existence of the Black Studies Institute revolutionizes the way Canadians answer the classic questions: Who can know? How can we know? What counts as knowledge?
We engage with Black Canadians, Black communities in Canada, Black students - with Black triumph and Black challenge - to create knowledge as Black scholars.
We produce, archive, and mobilize the knowledge we create toward the end of Black flourishing. Data and research can not be for others to own and exploit. Rather, they are instruments through which marginalized peoples can reclaim their own stories. The Black Studies Institute dismantles what was a monopoly.
The Black Studies Institute supports Black Studies at the University of Windsor, and the development of anti-racist knowledges in the public sector throughout Canada. We are committed to fulfilling our mandate as educators at a taxpayer-funded institution of higher learning by contributing to the national discourse in equity.
